As we face a potential pandemic situation in the United States, it’s more important than ever to prepare your family now for what could be potential weeks or months on lockdown. Now is not the time to panic. Now is the time to prep so you can help your family be ready for whatever may come in the next few months here.
Do you have a plan for your family yet if that happens and we go into lock down with less than a 24 hour notice warning?
You don’t just have to worry about yourself and feeding yourself through a lock down, but how about your entire family in a lock down situation?
We’ve been researching and keeping an eye on everything emerging from Wuhan since mid-January and we believe the local USA bubble of cases may pop soon becoming a larger problem. The last thing you want to be doing is dragging your family to a store in the middle of complete chaos/panic of everyone trying to grab supplies for their family. Things could get ugly there.
Save yourself the headache and potential threat of even being infected by shopping in stores and/or ordering in advance now. Even if things fizzle out (we pray to God that will happen) the things in this list below can still be used over the coming months and it’s not a waste of money. In fact, buying things in bulk will help you save money in the long run anyhow. Another thing to keep in mind, China manufacturing has completely shut down so supplies across the world will become scarce and prices will rise due to supply/demand. In China, prices on goods, even grocery goods are already skyrocketing.
We thought we’d share our list of things we’re prepping with (and some oddities with reasons why listed.) below. Also, make sure you check the things you use daily that mean a lot to you. If they are made in China, add them to your list and buy them RIGHT NOW. Stock will run out and then you’re SOL.
I’m not going to list out food prep/shopping list because there are many of lists out there. Just Google it. These are some of the key things in the prep process I felt I needed to spend extra time researching and would’ve missed in the basic search lists that I feel are important for my family and thought I would share with you all.
Formula – I personally would over prepare for this. You do NOT want to be stuck with a hungry baby and no formula. Go for 6+ months supply on this one (assuming your baby will still be under 1 years by 6 months out. Otherwise, you need to start prepping for whole powder milk at that transition). Do NOT risk it. Make sure to have enough water supply too (talked about in the water section)
Extra nipples for bottles
Teething Tablets or Gel
Small camp stove for boiling water
Diapers (6+ month supply)
Diaper Rash Cream
Sling/Carrier to carry baby and comfort baby – important if there is a lockdown and you have to walk on foot somewhere with baby while husband is in ICU or roles reversed.
Thermometer – Recommend either one dedicated for each family member or probe covers.
Diapers (6+ month supply)
Paper and pencil/markers/crayons: A few of my kids favorites: Melissa and Doug
Medicine & Vitamins:
Medicines: Call your doctor and try to get 3 month+ supply of medicines. We called our doctor for ear drops and he gave us a 6 month supply (assuming we had to use the drops often but fortunately we don’t too much).
Allergy Meds (especially if you get seasonal allergies)
Cold Medicine Adult
Cold Medicine Infant
Flu Medicine Adult/Children – Boiron Oscillococcinum
Pepto Bismal Adult
Tummy Meds For Children
Oxidimoter – Learning from China, the last thing you want to do is go to the hospital or clinic/doctor unless absolutely necessary because if you’re not infected yet. YOU will likely be infected then be after that visit if you weren’t yet. Hospitals have 1-6 airborne infectious rooms, after that, the virus will circulate through the vent system to everyone in the hospital and/or the doctors and nurses/crew (just as we learned from the poor passengers of the Diamond Princess and the hospitals in China). If you’re sick with the common flu that is going around and wary of going, you can track your oxygen levels (Google how to use it) and make an informed decision on the status of your lungs if it’s worth going in to get help. Do consult your doctor OVER PHONE before rushing into a local clinic or hospital. Do also call your CDC office too for their opinion on top of your doctor’s opinions because they will best be able to point you to the right location for you to go for your case.
EMS Bag – Literally, hospitals will only accept Covid19 patients at a certain point and probably pretty quickly once a cluster starts erupting. So you better get used to youtubing for injuries and treating them at home. This bag has EVERYTHING you need to best treat physical injuries at home.
Sterile gloves – Do not touch ANY surface that could have public germs on it. Pumping gas, credit card machine, you name it. Wear gloves always and DO NOT TOUCH YOUR FACE.
Sling/Carrier to carry baby and comfort baby – important if there is a lockdown and you have to walk on foot somewhere with baby while husband is in ICU or roles reversed
Toilet Paper – This was the #1 thing to fly off the shelves in China, even had gangs and people stealing thousands of dollars worth from stores. The coronavirus brings diarrhea for weeks in some patients. Could you imagine how much toilet paper you may go through with diarrhea for a 2-3 week span? Per person in your family?!
Tampons/Pads – plan for a 3+ month supply
Body Wash/Soap – Prebiotic because it works with your body, not against it. If your body is fighting this thing you don’t want to be killing the helpful bacteria on your body and diffuse your immune system more
Toothpaste – Prebiotic because it works with your body, not against it. If your body is fighting this thing you don’t want to be killing the helpful bacteria on your body and diffuse your immune system more
Lotion – Prebiotic because it works with your body, not against it. If your body is fighting this thing you don’t want to be killing the helpful bacteria on your body and diffuse your immune system more
Humidifier –It’s believed if you keep the throat moist the contagion has a harder time taking hold and developing into pneumonia
Small camp stove for boiling water
Water Proof Mattress Covers – Important for bodily secretions to protect mattress. You don’t want to be trying to buy a mattress that has been badly soiled when all manufacturing is shut down. It’s a small investment to protect something you use daily and may be hard a new one of for a while Ireland is already sold out for months of mattresses thanks to supply/demand issues.
Bulk Zip Lock bags (sandwich, gallon) . If water goes out, you can’t flush. You can dispose of waste in baggies.
Coffee Filters. People never forget to buy coffee in bulk but they do forget the filters! Don’t forget these.
Indoor Bounce House – Great for winter in general anyways. Your kids will have SOO much energy and if you can’t leave the house how will they get it out without driving you guys crazy let alone without going to sleep easily too. We have this bounce house (make sure you have a room big enough for it) and my kids use it day after day for hours on end. They like to fill it with pillows or (dare I say it, the privilege of our household, snacks) and jump around. They like to jump over the slide into pillows at the bottom. They get creative with it. But it not only gives them something to do, it wears them out. Warning. It’s loud. Often times friend’s kids come over just to jump in it and the kids have a hayday. Kuddos to Grandma Barry who thought of this one (having had 4 kids herself back to back in four years… oye)
Extra Containment/Health Preparation:
Masks– All sold out pretty much everywhere already or if they are in stock the prices are skyrocketing each day that goes by. Amazon has some (linked) now that are not cheap but that stock may sell out today even. You need an N-95 mask for this virus if you’re lucky enough to find one. Try local Ace Hardware Stores or smaller hardware stores like that. If you get one, Youtube search how to use it correctly. You CANNOT afford to slip up on this and just throw it on thinking you’re good.
Hazmat Suit – If you have to go to the hospital (or grocery store when things are bad, wear this) with your mask and eye protection.
Eye Protection – This is airborne, you need eye protection to go out.
Sterile Gloves – DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING without gloves on. The virus lives for 9 days on surfaces. Dispose of gloves before touching doorknobs to home. Remove clothes carefully, including shoes before entering home. Go right to shower and shower. DO not touch your face until you have washed thoroughly.
Bleach –AND LOTS OF IT! One of the first things to fly off the shelves. You will be decontaminating everything, including, bathroom area after going. It is contagious through fecal matter. Google how much gets thrown into the air when you flush a toilet. If you have to have a family member home self-quarantine, do NOT share bathrooms with them either. If you do, you must decontaminate it all every time.
Butterfly stitches – We talked about not going to the hospital unless you absolutely need to. Imagine this, kids going crazy in the house of boredom. One of them falls into something and needs stitches. Your whole plan to avoid the hospital unless necessary was throttled. You guys may get infected now going to a clinic or hospital.
Liquid Stitch – Can also be used for stitches depending on the cut/wound. Youtube video it.
Pet Food for 3+ months
Water (as explained in the water section)
A few Extra toys – our dog can rip up a ball in an hour, but she can take 4+ hours ripping up this:
Extra Poo Bags/ Piddle Pads
You may have these things already so now is the time to round them up and make sure they are charged.
Generator – Important if electricity goes out
Portable & regular batteries – For iphones, for anything else
Charge all electronic devices possible and keep them charged if using them
These are a few food products specifically good for kids we bought in bulk not listed in normal food prep lists (which I told you to Google in the beginning!) When you’re so bogged down with keeping up with the news while in lockdown healthy or sick… while it’s important to keep them healthy, it’s also important to keep them happy. Get them a few special treats in bulk.
Syrup – Can add to oatmeal
Chocolate Syrup – Can add to oatmeal
Mac N’ Cheese
(Salt, Flour – Biggest Bag You Can Find, Yeast – You can live off of bread for a long time you can make with flour, salt and yeast. *You can make bread everyday with Salt, Flour, Yeast and Water.)
Water & Storage
It is recommended to have 1 gallon of water per day per person (or pet) between drinking water, food prep and washing. That means you need about 30 gallons of water for one month. A good start is a 55 Gallon Water tub (and water preserve) for a couple, however, there aren’t many left in supply on Amazon. You can find them at local supply/survival type stores. In China, they have cut off water in some areas and welded doors shut. There is no way for those people to get water. We have shopped for water and found that it’s cheapest to get it from the dollar store gallon by gallon. The 2.5 gallon water containers aren’t the cheapest if buying in bulk.
Start hoarding empty bottles (even wine bottles) and jars. Wash them out and let them dry. If we go into lockdown start filling them up. Use the plastic wrap with a rubber band to cover them. Unless you have a water filter for drinking water for them, these can be used for washing yourself/kids, watering plants, etc.
If you have the means and can go one extra step, we recommend the water spout 55 gallon containers too for when your home 55 gallon container may run out. This can be used regardless for your garden and save you $$ on your water bill.
You can also use a SteriPen for stream water, etc.
Additional water storage and prep info here.
If you made it this far, the silver lining is that there have been 0 deaths of cases from 0-9 years old as of today. 1 death of 10-19 year olds. Have a backup plan for if an adult in your house gets it and has to be in the hospital or quarantined, as likely, you will need to be too. If you and your spouse get it and have to be hospitalized, think about your plan for your kids then. Few were left in horrible situations, one passed because of no one to care for them on record (before China shut down all communication with the Western world in Mid-January. Who knows what has happened since then.) Remember, they will not be able to go with you guys if you have to go to hospital, makeshift hospitals in stadiums or some sort of out of home quarantine.
Recommend watching now: Pandemic (Netflix)
The above list is based on research over the last month and is coming from reading multiple blogs, youtube videos, etc from both experts and non-experts alike. None of it should be considered for official medical advice/planning. Consult your local CDC office if you suspect you may have the Covid19 and they will tell you which hospital is ready to care for you.
