If we will be in a lock down in the late spring/early summer months, I will be devastated to not be able to grow fresh herbs veggies this year. Also, we won’t even know what kind of food we will have access too then. I’d like to make sure I have a fresh supply of food available for my family on top of canned goods. Problem is, I don’t have a green thumb in my body!

I’ve never been able to grow seeds from scratch and so every year we’ve just purchased plants at Home Depot for our garden. And another problem is, Home Depot and other businesses may not be open when it’s time to buy plants this year. We just don’t know and there are too many what ifs. But growing seeds from scratch is all around cheaper than buying baby plants that are grown already, so I will err on the safe/cheaper side and do them myself this year.
Yesterday, I called up my parents who are great gardeners and grew plants and vegetables for over 30 years to ask their advice on what supplies I’ll need to get started and successfully grow plants from seeds.
Here’s what they advised:
Start off with heirloom seeds.
For tomatoes, peppers, herbs, you need to grow them inside first. You can use empty k-pod cartridges, or buy trays or starter kits to get your seedling started in. You need potting soil in the bottom and add enough to make it 75% full.
Add water and let sit overnight making sure the soil is very very moist before you add 4 seeds on top. Cover the remaining 25% with Vermiculite. Cover with plastic lid so that the moisture stays in. Do not place in direct sunlight.
Make sure the potting soil stays very moist.
As the seeds start to sprout and they are sturdy, you will be moving them to a 4″ pot. Now you can place them in direct sunlight. Grow for recommended time on the package and then transfer to the garden.
OR, you can buy jiffy pods instead of doing the potting soil and vermiculite as pictured below.
For all others, you can just plant them in the ground outside as directed on the package.
I am waiting on the Vermiculite to arrive to plant more. I will update this post with pictures of that planter when I have it and progress along the way.
Don’t forget flower seeds too. When the world is turned upside down you’ll need something bright and cheery in your life.
