We wanted to create a space that would encourage creativity, movement and especially keep the kids from being hunched over a computer screen all day. So while desks are pretty standard for learning, we found this large activity table from Pottery Barn Kids that encourages activities spread out and allows the kids to move around but also to have a communal space. It has built in drawers where we keep paint and paint brushes. I love the paper holder on it which makes it easy to spark creativity.
We also have a TV up on the wall that we can connect as a monitor to the computer for the zoom calls and meeting. We have a video camera too we pull out when the time is needed for the calls.
I kept my desk area for my work. This way I can work while the kids are doing classes and I can quickly step in as needed if something arises. Many times things happen, like a computer getting unplugged and needing to be restarted. Or a prompt on the computer needing attention. Or some supplies are needed that aren’t readily available. So it’s good for me to be nearby too.
I like these desks from Pottery Barn Kids because they are “Smart” desks. They have plugs built in for USB and a simple touch turns on the light, which has various degrees of brightness based on what you’re doing (reading, etc). There is a chork board we can put up lessons, homework, artwork and more for display. There is a ton of drawer and shelf space for all of the supplies needed and workbooks.
The colorful bright rug ties in the colors and encourages a fun atmosphere. This rug is super big and fluffy and feels great and bare feet. I just love it.
We also got an Amazon Alexa Echo for the kids. They like to call the Grandmas and Grandpas who also like to chat with them. They sometimes play games like Tik Tac Toe and more. This gives them something to do, a way to connect more during these crazy times, and gives me a bit of a break so I can focus on working too.
